2. The title of this episode also refers to the fact that Ralph Cifaretto (perhaps the most un-Christlike of all the gangsters who appear in the series) receives a promotion to crew captain in this episode, despite Tony’s strong dislike of him. He is, after all, a “good earner.”
3. Christmas is a prominent motif throughout this episode. Indeed, the title of the episode is taken from the classic Christmas carol, “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen.” In keeping with the secular nature of the world of The Sopranos, however, this is a Christmas decidedly dominated by Santa Claus, rather than by Jesus Christ, despite the title reference.
